My Work
Below are some highlights of my journey as Student Body Vice President & Chairperson for Academic Affairs. Although not all of my experience, I wanted to showcase the diverse projects I have led and participated in.
Below are some highlights of my journey as Student Body Vice President & Chairperson for Academic Affairs. Although not all of my experience, I wanted to showcase the diverse projects I have led and participated in.
One of the opportunities I was able to help lead was the push for a safer campus. Being charged with this significant project, I worked towards improving overall campus safety and the campus safety climate by ensuring accountability without the campus safety team and working towards general improvements in the broader campus safety climate by pushing for increased lighting to help keep our community safe while walking during the evening, pushing for updated security door scanners eliminating the need for swipe access pushing us towards the "tap" modern standard, further addressing outdated blue light box systems. My work in this field is far from over, and I hope to have your continued support in my potential next term as your Student Body President.
One of the issues I was able to advocate for and finally see change being moved on was the removal of the graduation requirement Eportfolio component. Under my term as Chairperson for Academic Affairs, I had started my work on this issue, and being able to continue my advocacy in my term as Student Body Vice President, I was able to see through the removal, having recently been voted for removal by the entire faculty at one of their all faculty meetings and further ratified by the Board of Trustees, which will have a blanket waiver for all enrolled students, so everyone can benefit from this policy.
One of the opportunities I was able to help lead was the Menstrual Products Dispenser project, so we can support our students who menstruate on campus by providing access to free tampons and pads in our academic buildings.
This has been a long and challenging project that required methodical planning, time, and effort. Under my leadership, this project brought the Student Health Center, Health Promotions, and Cornell Facilities Team on board to make this project happen. This project has been tried previously by Student Senate administrations, but finally, it is around the corner, and I hope to be able to continue my work on this vital project with more dispensers and greater access across all buildings on our campus.
Under my leadership as Chairperson for Academic Affairs, there has been a revitalization of our Academic Grant Program, in both word of mouth to students interested in getting funding for an academic experience, to partnering with faculty to help bring this information to their students, whether that be to get a book they can not afford, to traveling to a museum for their capstone project, we have seen a growing number of interested students who use the program.
A part of this revitalization was instituting a more robust contract that grant applicants must agree to. This is partly because I believe that since this money belongs to students, we must protect it at all levels and prevent misuse. The contract and policies now reflect similar programs such as Ingenuity in Action funding.
Wanting to expand and mix things up, the Academic Affairs Committee, under my leadership, planned one of its first events in recent history.
During Block 2 this year, my committee members and I handed out goodie bags on the last day of the block, which included a snack and drink, and encouraging messages to wish you good luck on your possible exam. My committee, of course, did not forget the hot cocoa, and with the bags, we had a little something to help get your day started and carry you into acing that final exam.
I will continue to help inspire Senate Committees to hold new and fresh events but also help with making sure critical events like Late Night Breakfast stick around.
